Trumpetfish (71k)

The trumpetfish is very timid and swims away from divers in a conventional, horizontal fashion unless it thinks it's cornered-- then it finds some vertical camouflage like these red whip corals, where it goes into a vertical position to confuse its pursuer. This specimen is probably about 2 feet in length.

The camera used here was a Nikonos V with a Nikonos 15mm wide angle lens and Ikelite Substrobe 225. Depth about 80 feet.

Identification:
Aulostomus chinensis
